Type 1 diabetes is the result of pancreatic B cell destruction. In time, this destruction usually leads to an absolute deficiency of insulin. Without insulin, glucose
can not be taken up by target cells and blood sugars rise to dangerously high levels.
Early in the development of the disease, a honeymoon phase may set in. During this time, insulin
production by B cells may be adequate but slowing. Eventually, though, all people with Type 1 diabetes will require insulin.
