Prevalence of Glucose Intolerance in Different Countries

The most  dramatic statistic on diabetes is that approximately 33% of people  who have it have not been diagnosed, and some other studies this figure may reach more than 50. This is of concern because some  serious complications begin to develop early in the disease. These  complications might be prevented or delayed with earlier diagnosis  and treatment.

Here is a  summary of other important statistics on  diabetes:

Prevalence of diabetes

  • Approximately 16 million people  in the USA have diabetes.
  • Only 10 million (65%) have been  diagnosed.

Incidence of diabetes

  • Approximately 800,000 new cases  are diagnosed per year

Prevalence of diabetes by age

  • Age 65 years or  older: 6.3 million. 18.4  percent of all people in this age group have diabetes.
  • Age 20 years or  older: 15.6 million. 8.2  percent of all people in this age group have diabetes.
  • Under age 20: 123,000. 0.16 percent of all people in  this age group have diabetes.

Prevalence of diabetes by gender in people 20 years or older

  • Men: 7.5 million. 8.2 percent of all men have  diabetes.
  • Women: 8.1 million. 8.2 percent of all women have diabetes.

Just under 10% of people with  diabetes have Type 1

  • It is the most common chronic disease  in children under age 16.
  • In 30-50% of Type 1 identical twin  pairs both twins have diabetes, thus its development has a genetic  tendency, but less so than Type 2
  • Peoples of northern european origin  have the highest prevalence.

Less than 1% of people with  diabetes have Other Specific Types
