Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic
Nonketotic Coma (HHNK)

Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic Coma develops as a result of very high  blood glucose concentrations in blood. Dehydration resulting from  excessive fluid loss with very high blood glucose causes blood water levels to fall. This dramatically worsens the problem of high glucose, concentrating sugar more. In patients who develop HHNK insulin is produced, so severe ketosis seen in DKA is prevented. Still, HHNK is life threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
